Chronicles of Elyria Hype Round One!

It's about time I told you guys about Chronicles of Elyria. I mentioned it in my blog last week and there wasn't much I could touch on without breaking everything with the information overload. Even in this article I won't discuss everything. I just hope this will be enough to convey my own excitement for this groundbreaking mmorpg.

What is it?

Chronicles of Elyria is a living breathing medieval fantasy game world currently in pre-alpha. In this world, you play how you want to play. You can be a professional blacksmith or a monster hunter or a scholar. This game is built so that you do not have to concern yourself with battle unless you want to. There is life and death and such things actually matter. Your character has a life span. You have the opportunity to impact the lore and history of the world. Your destiny is unique and your own, the narrative unique to yourself. You can choose to be the good guy or the bad guy and your choices matter. And best of all? Everything from politics to the economy is player driven.

Life and death

To play the game, you have to buy the game and it came with your first spark of life. This is basically their subscription program but it’s probably the most affordable one I’ve seen since it’s just $25 for a spark of life that will last just over a real-life year. Your soul is immortal and will be reincarnated. I suggest having kids so carry on your bloodline and have a predetermined place for that soul of yours to go. You will relearn previous life skills faster and you will be able to advance further with each new life.

Anyway, you will create your character, pick a family, and begin your journey. You can be part of a NPC family but it’s, in my opinion, better to have a player family to have the support of others. I suggest starting this with friend or finding a group on the forums looking for more people. Personally, I’m starting with friends and I’m sure my family leader will accept more people into our numbers.

Game progression is skill focused. This means that by doing things you will progress. If you don’t know what you want to do now, you will fall into something naturally as you do what you want to do. You don’t have to fight to have a life in game. Because of this, crafting is a big deal.

Death works a lot like how it works in the real world. You can be killed, and you can die of old age. When you are killed you will go into the spirit plane and have to walk to your body. I have heard that this will be explorable and have its own secrets to uncover but I haven’t read anything official. There will be repercussions to death. When you died of old age, it means your spark of life has been used.

The Land

There are a wide range of biomes and life in this game. Nature is reactive meaning that deforestation and wiping out populations of animals will have an effect on the world. This means we as players have a responsibility to source materials responsibly. This isn’t World of Warcraft where you can just kill everything in an area, and it respawns. Each biome will have different kinds of animal and plant life that can be harvested for crafting or for selling. Animal breeding is a thing! There are those in the community already planning the best options on how to do this and conserve the population. They do require resources to survive just like players do. So remember to tame and breed responsibly.

The players who bought high ranks have already picked their plots of land, giving us an idea what our kingdoms, duchies, and counties will look like. This means, those of us who have already got a foot in our community know a good deal about where we will be living and who our leaders will be. This is a good time to remind you that everything is player governed and player built. You and the other people in your community are responsible for building up your infrastructure and economy.

You do have the opportunity to forsake a community to become an explorer instead. These people will be able to name landmarks they find. However, this doesn’t mean the rest of the world will follow suit and you have to spread the information as if teaching a skill. Realism much? Absolutely!

There are twelve tribes. Each tribe has their own features and culture. Think of these as races. I’ll only touch on one of these to give you an idea. The Brudvir is the race I will be starting with at launch because, well, that will be my in-game family’s race. Everything from their diet, in this case meat eaters, to advantages, such as ability to survive in harshly cold environments, to their attributes, such as the ability to intuitively read the intentions of foreigners, are all unique. They have their own religion (Faedin) and language (Neran), which is shared with a limited number of other tribes. They have their own arts and music as well. The arts, music, and religion are the primary features I will be focusing on as I will be a lore keeper and practitioner of the bardic arts.

Conclusion

Phew! That was a lot of information and I’ve not even touched on half of it. Now you guys know where I wanted to give this a completely separate entry from my buzz post. I encourage all of you to go and read the website yourself to get a better feel for this game. Hopefully this at least gave you guys an idea as to why I’m so excited about this and why I’m so invested in it. If you are interested in joining any of the groups I’m invested in here, please contact me on my blog or on discord (discord name below and I do accept all messages).
